SentierElsa – The river, the town, the river park
A nature gateway just a few steps away from the town centre.
Would you like to immerse yourself in nature? A short walk from Colle’s town centre is all it takes to reach the heart of the SentierElsa Trail, which is also part of the Via Francigena Trail.
Here, among waterfalls, natural pools and wooden walkways suspended over the water, you will discover a vibrant ecosystem. A true natural wonder, which changes its appearance with every season.
Along the river, tracing history
Along the trail you will see ancient water management structures, such as the Steccaia and the Gore, which for centuries have blended seamlessly into the natural landscape. Since the Middle Ages, this hydraulic system has carried water into the town, powering and fulling mills, and later supporting the development of ironworks and glassworks.
You can follow the river upstream to the springs of Le Vene or to the ancient thermal baths of Le Caldane, already frequented in Etruscan-Roman period.
SentierElsa is enchanting in every season. Month after month, the changing colours and vegetation offer views and hues that linger in the heart.
Experience the Elsa River safely
The Elsa River and the SentierElsa are a natural environment of great value, to be experienced with respect for the territory and current regulations.
Swimming and any water-based activities are prohibited along the SentierElsa.
The prohibition covers the entire stretch of the Elsa River between the San Marziale Bridge and the Spugna Bridge, within the “Elsa River Park” ANPIL.
All rafting and navigation activities with dinghies, canoes, kayaks, SUPs, watercraft, or floats of any kind are also prohibited, whether for sporting, recreational, or commercial purposes.
Please respect the prohibition and the signage present along the trail.
Violation of the ordinance entails an administrative fine ranging from 25 to 500 euros, without prejudice to any further penalties provided for by current legislation.
The protection of the Elsa River and everyone’s safety also depend on following the rules.
